Pocket square is a classic and timeless menswear detail that allow you to express your own style and personality.
It’s meant to add touch of sophistication and elegance to gentleman’s look. Choose your pocket square to complement the rest of the outfit, but not necessarily by choosing complimentary colors. A little creativity will keep an inner smile on your face throughout the day. What looks right to you personally is what matters most, as your projection of yourself is what makes an outfit come alive.
The pocket square adds the most nonchalance to any outfit, and it will strike other people’s attention. Wearing a pocket square requires a certain degree of self-confidence and nonchalance. And if you enjoy your square, chances are that others will as well.
Pocket squares must be worn with nonchalance. As if they were employed to wipe spilled champagne off a lady’s dress mere moments ago.
It goes without saying the pocket square needs to be clean and ironed. Nonchalance is good, messiness isn’t.
There are many ways to fold a pocket square but how you choose to do it depends mostly on your own mood (and slightly on the degree of formality of the occasion).
Here are some of the folds I use most often and that are guaranteed to have you covered from casual to formal.
The Presidential Fold
- Lay the pocket square on a flat surface.
- Beginning with the left side, fold the pocket square vertically to the centre.
- Repeat this with the right side so they are meeting in the middle.
- Fold the bottom of the pocket square towards the top – ensure it does not fully reach the top.
The Puff Fold
- Lay the pocket square on a flat surface and pinch the center.
- Pick it up from the center.
- With one hand firmly holding the pocket square, use your other hand to gently gather it closed.
- Fold the pointed edges over, ensuring you do not pass the centre.
The Crown Fold
- Lay the pocket square on a flat surface.
- Pick up the pocket square by pinching it near the center.
- With one hand firmly holding the pocket square, use your other hand to gently gather it closed.
- Gracefully roll the top of the pocket square in the direction of the arrow. Turn your pocket square upside down.
The Winged Puff
- Lay the pocket square diagonally on a flat surface.
- Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner.
- Fold the top left and right corners down and in, so you create a diamond like effect.
- Fold the left, right and bottom corners in.
Nonchalantly Yours,
Nikola
